Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes they wear a bonnet and carry a lamp. And if they’re super, they just might save millions of lives.

This hero is Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.

In 1854, Nightingale volunteered to care for the wounded on the frontlines of the Crimean War. What she saw shocked her. Unsanitary conditions and unhygienic care were killing soldiers 10x more than wounds from battle.

Horrified and armed with the numbers, she appealed to the Times back home. Her findings caused an earthquake that moved the British government to reimagine healthcare, including the creation of prefabricated field hospitals. The British public, so thankful for her efforts, immortalized her as 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘱, caring for the needy and infirmed.

After the war, she spent her life establishing modern nursing through the use of statistics and data visualization. She even invented the polar area pie chart.

In today’s world, we’ve all known the care of a nurse, often in our most vulnerable moments. That gift was given to us by Florence Nightingale through her dedication to care and data-driven medicine. For that, millions of us say thank you to nurse analyst Nightingale.
