What Is an Audit Trail?
An audit trail is a secure, step-by-step record of events in a system that shows who carried out each action, what changed, when it happened, and why.
It generally includes entries for user logins, data changes, workflow changes, approvals, permission changes, and other system events, producing a tamper-evident history that can be examined later.
Audit trails are a fundamental part of governance, security, and compliance. They aid forensic investigations in the event of a problem, provide the evidence that auditors need to verify the controls in place, and give business owners assurance that the figures reported can be traced back to their source.
In finance, tax, and accounting workflows, a good audit trail connects each output back to the original data, the transformations applied, the logic used, and the user activity that led to it, all of which are necessary for ensuring reproducibility and complying with requirements set out in SOX, GDPR, HIPAA, and other similar regulations.
