What Is Workflow Automation?
Workflow automation is the process of using software to plan, carry out, and manage business processes in such a way that tasks, data, and approvals are passed from one stage to the next without the need for manual action. Rather than having people copy data between different systems, follow up on approvals by email, or manually run recurring reports, teams set out the sequence of steps once and then allow the system to carry out that sequence either on a schedule or in response to a trigger. In the area of data and analytics, this generally includes extracting data from source systems, cleaning and transforming it, applying the relevant business logic, and then delivering the results to downstream tools, dashboards, or to stakeholders. Well-designed workflow automation increases speed and consistency, removes the need for humans to carry out low-value, repetitive tasks, and establishes a clear and controlled record of how each process is carried out. This is particularly useful in finance, tax, accounting, and operations, since the same processes have to be carried out accurately and defensibly every cycle.
